  * Intel 386, 486, Pentium, or fully compatible processor
  * 16-30 Mb of free hard disk space
  * 8 Mb of RAM
  * Microsoft Windows 3.1x or Windows NT 3.5x or Windows 95

If your computer has a numerical co-processor Maple V Release 4 will
take advantage of it.

Installation
------------

The following are the quick installation instructions for
Maple V Release 4 for these platforms:

  MS Windows 95
  MS Windows NT 3.5x
  MS Windows 3.1x

Please note that Windows 95, Windows NT, and Windows 3.1 versions
come on the same set of disks.

Details instructions are in the pamphlet, "Maple V Release 4
Installation Instructions."

1. Install on a system running Windows 95 by doing the following:

  (a) Insert Disk 1 of the Maple V distribution disks, or if you
have the CD-ROM version, insert the CD-ROM.
  (b) Within the Windows 95 environment, select START/RUN and type
"a:install" in the dialog box for the Run command. Then press
the Enter key, or click on the OK button (or run "install" from
       the CD-ROM).
  (c) Follow the instructions that the installer provides.
Insert the other distribution disks when requested.

2. Install on a system running Windows 3.1 or Windows NT by doing
   the following:

  (a) Insert Disk 1 of the Maple V distribution disks or if you
have the CD-ROM version, just insert the CD-ROM.
  (b) Within the Program Manager select FILE/RUN type
"a:install" in the dialog box for the Run command. Then press
the Enter key, or click on the OK button (or run "install" from
       the CD-ROM).
  (c) Following the instructions provided by the installer.
Insert the other distribution disks when requested.

If you are installing under Windows 3.1 and the installer tells
you that Win32s version 1.30 is not installed, please read "For
   Windows 3.1 Users Only", below.

For Windows 3.1 Users Only:

Maple requires Win32s version 1.30 or higher to run under Windows
3.1x. If you do not have Win32s version 1.30 installed on your system
already, then you should install it before installing Maple. To
install Win32s version 1.30, choose File->Run from the Program
Manager and run the program, setup.exe, which resides on the disk
labeled `Win32s DISK 1', or in the directory `\win32s\disk1' on the
CD. If you are certain that Win32s version 1.30 installation or
higher already exists, then you may press "Continue Anyway" to
install Maple without installing Win32s first.

Install Maple when the Win32s installation is complete.

Problems Installing Win32s (Windows 3.1 Only):

If Maple does not start up properly, or if the Microsoft program
Freecell does not run properly, then Win32s version 1.30 is not
properly installed on your computer. If you have installed Maple but
chose not to install Win32s at that time, please install it now by
inserting disk 1 of Win32s setup, or by choosing the Win32s disk1
  directory of the CD.

If you continue to have problems, remove Win32s and re-install.

How to Remove Win32s (Windows 3.1 Only):

Follow this procedure only if you experience the problems described
in the section "Problems Installing Win32s", above.

Delete the WIN32S directory, the WIN32APP directory, W32SYS.DLL,
W32S16.DLL, and WIN32S.EXE from your hard drive. Although it is
possible to install Win32s version 1.30 on top of an old installation
of Win32s, it is better to remove the old files before installing the
  new ones.

Edit the WIN32S.INI file on your hard drive. Below "[Win32s]", change
the line which reads "SETUP = 1" to read "SETUP = 0". Reboot your
  computer and then re-install Win32s.

Microsoft provides the Win32s installer as it is a Microsoft product.
Waterloo Maple can not claim any responsibility for either
  Microsoft's installer or their product.

If problems persist, please contact your Maple technical support
  representative.

Alternate Installation method for Windows NT 3.5
------------------------------------------------

If you have trouble installing Release 4 for NT 3.5x, then run the
program ntinstal.exe located on Disk 1 of the Maple distribution.
At the end of the install, you will have to set up your own program
group and icons.

The Worksheet Interface
-----------------------

For help on the Worksheet Interface, see the help page ?worksheet.
You may view this page either by typing "?worksheet" at the Maple
prompt, or by choosing "Contents" from the "Help" menu and then
selecting "Interface" from the main Contents help page.

The Command Line Interface
--------------------------

Maple V Release 4 provides a Command Line Interface. This is a
small efficient interface to the full Maple mathematical engine.
It is particularly useful when tackling large problems on slower
computers, or computers with limited memory.

On Windows 95 and Windows NT platforms, the Command Line Interface
is called "cmaple". On Windows 3.1 machines its name is "mapledos".
A description of this version is located in the file "cmdline.txt".
For help on editing input in the Command Line Interface, see the
Maple help page ?editing.

Contents of the Maple Directory
-------------------------------

The installation procedure requires 16-19 Mbytes of disk space and, by
default, places the Maple V R4 files in a folder named MapleV4.
In this folder, you should see the following files and directories:

  README.TXT This file
CMDLINE.TXT A description of the Command Line interface.
MARCH.TXT Description of the Maple library archive manager
MINT.TXT Description of the Mint Maple syntax checker
R3TOR4.TXT List of differences between Maple V R3 and
Maple V R4 that are important if you would
like to use worksheets and code created by
R3 in the new R4 system
UPDTSRC.TXT Information on updating source code to Release 4

  AFM Directory containing font information
BIN.WIN Directory containing Maple V executable program
EXAMPLES Directory containing Maple V worksheets that you
should examine using Maple V R4. These provide
examples of some of the important new capabilities.
ETC Miscellaneous files, including LaTeX style files
LIB Directory containing Maple V library files
LICENSE Directory containing Maple V licensing information
MWSHELP Directory containing the interface help database
SHARE Directory containing the Share library (if you
                   chose to install it)

Notes
-----

Printing a Selection:

Please note that Print Selection is not available in Maple.
Windows provides the Print dialog box, but Maple greys-out the
  "Selection" button.

Pasting Bitmaps:

You no longer need to paste Maple plots into worksheets as bitmaps,
because in-line plots are available in Maple V Release 4.
To paste a bitmap of a Maple plot into a worksheet you must copy
the Maple generated plot into another application then copy the
  plot back into Maple.

Cutting and Pasting Maple V Release 4 output:

You cannot cut and paste formatted Maple V R4 output into
any other application, as you can from within a
  Maple V Release 3 environment.

Configuring the License Manager:

The single user version of Maple comes pre-licensed, so you need
not configure the license manager. If you are installing
a network version of Maple, please refer to the network
  installation instructions included separately.

Tips for Windows 3.1 users with Smaller Machines (8 Mb of RAM)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Maple V Release 4 contains substantially more functionality than
previous releases. You may find that you cannot tackle as large
problems on your computer as with Release 3. If you are running
Release 4 with 8 Mb of RAM or less, you may encounter problems.
The following tips may be helpful:

1. Before running Maple V Release 4, close other applications.

2. You can increase the total amount of memory available to run Maple
using the Control Panel's "386 Enhanced" applet. Click on "Virtual
Memory...", press "Change>>", and enter a larger value in the "New
   Size" field.

If you have the "32-bit Disk File Access" checkbox enabled, you can
free more memory by reducing the cache size. Enter a smaller value into
the "Cache Size" field. Note that a smaller cache size will decrease
   disk access performance.

3. The Command Line version of Maple is a text-based interface to Maple V
Release 4. This version is known as mapledos.exe under Windows 3.1 and
as cmaple.exe under Windows 95 and Windows NT. The Command Line
Interface requires much less memory than the usual Worksheet
Interface. This application is suitable for memory-intensive
computations that do not require the worksheet interface. See the
   file "cmdline.txt" for more information.

4. The Win32s DLLs which provide support for OLE 2.0 take up a substantial
amount of memory. Thus, Maple will only load these DLLs if you perform
an OLE 2.0 related action, such as inserting/pasting an OLE 2.0 object
or opening a worksheet which contains such objects.
